Trip Report for the O9 Well Survey Trip 5-3-97

Personal: Terry Holsinger, Charlie Savvas, Rachel Savvas, Jennifer Townsdin, Vico Jones, Bonnie Longly, Oscar Berrones, Luicle Berrones, Joe Ivy, Rebecca Jones, Eric Flint, Hunter Phillips, Patrick Lynott, Walter Feaster

All personal arrived without any hitches on Friday night; Walter around 7:45, Joe, Rebecca, Eric, Patrick, and Hunter arrived around 8:00, The BUS crew arrived at 3:00am. In the morning all were greeted to the sight of the whole area covered with Green plants and wildflowers, something not expected in west Texas in May. After breakfast, people started to gear up, no haste was needed as the temp was only in the 60's. It was soon noted that Charlie had left his caving gear in Austin in his scout. After a few moments scrounging, Charlie had a full set of gear.

Joe and the Rigging / Downstream Survey team, (of Rebecca, Hunter, Eric, & Patrick) were the first into the cave. Entering around 11:00. They Rigged the entrance, and headed deeper into the cave to first replace/set a new ss bolt. After setting the bolt they started surveying out of the cave. Around 3:00 they headed out of the cave, for lunch, restroom break, etc. Reentering the cave ,sans Rebecca, around 5:30 to finish the survey. They finished and exited the cave by around 9:00. They set 31 stations, for a "length" of 235 meters and a depth of 54.94 meters. This was from the bottom of the entrance drop to the sump. Sunday morning Joe, Hunter, and Patrick reentered the cave around 10:00 to finish up the last of the rigging. They left for Austin about 2:00.

The farthest reaching upstream survey team, Charlie, Vico, and Jennifer, entered the cave around 1:30 due to gear sorting and helping people unused to rebelays. They headed upstream about 270 meters and surveyed out until they encountered the other upstream survey teams marker. But first they headed upstream in an attempt to pass the farthest point Charlie had been. They went far enough that they got out of the canyon passage into the original conduit passage. They noted a small side lead that will be surveyed in the future. Also they noted a flowing in feeder which they entered for a short distance before returning to the "main" passage. The set 15 stations for 75 meters of length. Charlie exited the cave around 6:00, helping his daughter, Rachel, to exit the cave. Vico and Jennifer then toured downstream and exited around 7:00.

The final survey team of Terry, Bonnie, Oscar, Luicle, and Rachel, started at the windmill and surveyed upstream for 25 stations, a length of 196 meters, and a depth of 38 meters. They entered the cave starting around 12:00, and starting their survey beyond the entrance at 1:30. Terry exited the cave at 5:00, while the rest of the team (sans Rachel) headed downstream to visit the cave. This was the first time to this cave for everyone on this team. A small skeleton was found calcited into a rim stone dam, and a good climb lead was noted at the tie-in with the other upstream team. This lead looks like the entrance does from below. The last of this team exited the cave around 9:00, to a cool clear "wind free" night.

Robert Campbell, the projects co-instigator, called Friday and said he was unable to make the trip as he had strained his back at work, chain-sawing a large area for surveying. His rider also bailed because he came down with the flu. The bus team left for Austin around 12:00 and arrived there at 6:00, in time to attend a party for another caver who was leaving for France for the summer. On the way home the Bus's rear differential started to make noise, may have "headed south" and may need another $300.00 ring gear set. This was a bad ending for Charlie as his Harley was stolen the Thursday before the trip.

The time has not been set for the return trip to continue the upstream survey. The Total surveyed length for this weekend was 506 meters, and the new depth is 93 meters. The old length is 1372 meters. The old depth is 101 meters. We will be rechecking the depth on a future trip, until then I feel it is apporeate to continue using the old depth of 101 meters. All persons who attended this trip are interested in continuing with the project. When it looks like an open date can be set the survey will continue. Charlie will start drafting the map.
