Hugh Richardson Garden

Hugh Richardson Garden poses in his custom tailored Captain's uniform in the summer of 1862.

Garden had served for the first year of the war in the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry under Colonel Joseph B. Kershaw in the company known as the Sumter Guards, in which he was Colour Sergeant.

After the war Captain Garden moved to Virginia and then later to New York City where he practiced law and helped found the New York chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. When he retired he moved back to Sumter, South Carolina, where he is buried.
