CONSTEIN, Conrad; Private/Corporal. (artificer) Enlisted April 8, 1862, at Sumter, by Captain Garden. Wounded at Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, "severely in right foot" and sent to the hospital at Staunton, Va. Present with the rank of Corporal at Appomattox. 28 years old, 5'-8" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes and light hair.

COOPER, F.W.; Private. Enlisted March 16, 1864 at Lindsey Station, Va. by Capt. Garden. Captured October 26, 1864 at Nine Mile Road and was sent to Point Lookout.

COX, W.H.; Private. Enlisted April 28, 1864 at Lindsey Station by Captain Garden.

CROLEY, James; Private. Enlisted March 15,1862 at Cheraw by Lt. W.H. Coit.

CROSWELL, J.R.; Private. Enlisted December 21, 1864 at Columbia by Major Green. At Appomattox he was 37 years old, 5'11 " tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

CROSWELL, W.K.; Private. Enlisted October 20, 1864 at Columbia by Major Green. Captured April 2,1865 and sent to Libby Prison. 6'-1" tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark brown hair.

DARGAN, R.J.; Private. Enlisted March 15, 1862, at Sumter, by J.S. Richardson.

DAVIDSON, George W.; Private. (blacksmith) Enlisted March 9, 1862 at Cheraw by Lt. W.H. Coit. Served through the entire war in all campaigns and was present at Appomattox. 32 years old, 5'- 10" tall, fair complexion, dark hair, and dark eyes.

DEES, Angus; Private. Enlisted March 11, 1862, at Cheraw, by Lt. W.H. Coit. Wounded at Sharpsburg, September 17, 1862, "slightly in left shoulder". Present at Appomattox. 27 years old, 6'-2" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

DENNIS, S. Theodore; Private. Enlisted April 30, 1862, at Sumter by Captain Garden. Present at Appomattox. 20 years old, 5'8" tall, light complexion, gray eyes, and light hair.

DIXON, R.; Private. Enlisted February 23,1863 at Cheraw by Lt. George Coit. Unfit for service and detailed as Hospital Guard.

DUNLAP, W.B.; Private. Enlisted February 23, 1865 at Richmond by Captain Garden. 24 years old, 5'-9" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair.

DUNN, David R.; Private. Enlisted July 1,1864 at Petersburg by Captain Garden. 18 years old, 5'-6" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

FLOWERS, Samuel F.; Private. Grew up in Sumter where his father was a "coachmaker". Enlisted June 28, 1862, at Columbia, by Captain Garden.

FLOWERS, Thomas E.; Private. Enlisted October 29, 1864 at Columbia by Major Green.

FLOWERS, William R.; Private. (artificer/carpenter) Enlisted March 15, 1862, at Sumter, by J.S. Richardson.

FORT, Edward; Private. Enlisted March 8, 1862, at Cheraw, by Lt. W.H. Coit. Died of pneumonia on May 3, 1863, at Chimborazo Hospital.

FREEDER, Francis; Private. Enlisted March 10,1862, at Cheraw, by Lt. W.H. Coit.

GARDEN, Alester; Sergeant. Enlisted at Martinsburg, Virginia, on September 23, 1862. "Transferred from Co. D, 2nd S.C., September 23, under Special Orders No. 198, Gen'1 Lee, Comdg. General. Detailed to proceed to Richmond, Va. with division. Muster roll Oct.1 -Nov.1,1862, "present". The battery was engaged with the enemy on May 3, 1863, during the seige of Suffolk. On this day, Sergeant Garden was struck in the head by a piece of shrapnel. Sent home to Sumter on recuperative leave. Died of his wounds on May 25th, 1863.

GARDEN, Hugh Richardson; Captain. Was a lawyer before the war. Before forming the Palmetto Light Artillery, Hugh Garden was Sergeant and Color Bearer for the 2nd S.C. Regt. of Infantry. Served in this capacity at the battle of 1st Manassas. Returning home in 1862, he recruited men and formed a battery of artillery. Commanded the Palmetto Light Artillery through all major campaigns in the war, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Suffolk, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Richmond, and signed the parole roster at Appomattox. 23 years old, 5'-4" tall, fair complexion, black eyes, and black hair. Wounded at Cold Harbor and hospitalized for "Int Febris" from June 14-July 2, 1864. In speaking for his battery to General Wade Hampton, Garden referred to it as having been "raised, and for the most part equipped by me . . ."

GARDNER, William, Private. Enlisted February 8, 1864 at Cheraw. Present until paroled at Appomattox.17 years old,5'-4" tall, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair.

GAYLE, Charles W.; Private/Corporal. Enlisted on March 20, 1862, at Cheraw by Lt. W.H. Coit. Except for a short time at hospital between Sept. "&" Nov.1864 (dysentery and jaundice), he was present until paroled at Appomattox. 36 years old, 5'-8" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

GOODWIN, Henry J.; Private. Enlisted March 15, 1862, at Cheraw, by Lt. W.H. Coit.

GOODWIN, James G.; Private. Enlisted February 23, 1863 at Cheraw by Lt. G.E. Coit.

GOODWIN, Louis C.; Private. Transferred from Major Coit's Battalion in exchange for Pvt. Thomas Woodward. Present Jan-Feb 1864. Age 24, 5'-5" tall, dark complexion, gray eyes and dark hair.

GORDON, W. Hayne, Private; Enlisted August 19,1863 at James Island by Captain Richardson. Transferred from Company F, Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery on June 16, 1864. Wounded at Petersburg, July 19, 1864. Furloughed.

GRADY, Willis W. "Bill"; Private. Was 14 years old when he was enlisted on April 30, 1862 at Sumter by Captain Garden. Served as a driver and saw action at 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Suffolk, and was the driver for the howitzer crew that went forward at Gettysburg in support of the Great Charge. Served with the battery in every campaign of the war and was present at Appomattox. 17 years old, 5'8" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair.

GREEN, James G., Private: Enlisted on April 8, 1862 at Sumter by Captain Garden. Age 23, 5'-7" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

GREEN, John J.; Corporal. Enlisted on December 15, 1862, at Fredericksburg, Virginia, by Captain Garden. Serving at the battle of Gettysburg, was part of rescue team that went forward to extricate the disabled howitzer crew after action on July 3rd. Present at Appomattox. 33 years old, 5'-10" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair.

HARP, James A.; Private. Enlisted on March 8,1862, at Cheraw, S.C. by Lt. W.H. Coit. Muster roll on May 1, 1863, shows him at 'extra duty as blacksmith". He was also serving as blacksmith in June,1863. Furloughed in February 1864 for 21 days. On October 7, 1864, he was wounded in battle on the Darbytown Road outside Richmond, and sent to Jackson Hospital. The hospital reads "V.S. head M.B." (very severe, head, minie ball). Died on October 13, .864. A claim for pension was presented by his widow, Charity Harp.

HARTH, William E.; Private. Enlisted on September 1, 1864 at Petersburg by Captain Garden. Wounded at Appomattox Courthouse, (pril 9, 1865. "Burn from explosion of powder, upper third right thigh." Captured at Appomattox and sent to Lincoln USA Gen'1 Hospital, Washington, D.C. Released on June 14,1865. 16 years old, 5'-7" tall, fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair.

HAWKINS, C.M.; Private. Enlisted on April 3, 1863, at Richmond, Va. by Captain Garden. Arrested for murder and sent to prison on May 9, 1863. Jan. "&" Feb. 1864 muster roll reports him "dropped from roll".

HAYNESWORTH, Charles L.; Private. (brother to James and Matthew) Was 17 years old when he enlisted in the battery on April 8, 1863 by Captain Garden. Was No. 3 on the howitzer crew at Gettysburg. Present at Appomattox. 19 years old, 5'-6" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

HAYNESWORTH, James Henry; Private/Corporal. Enlisted on April 8, 1862, at Sumter, by Captain Garden. Served at 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Suffolk, and was No. 1 on the howitzer crew at Gettysburg. In this action at Gettysburg, on July 3rd, 1863, he was wounded "severely in head." Promoted to Corporal on July 7, 1863. Present at Appomattox. 23 years old, 6'-2" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

HAYNESWORTH, Matthew E.; Corpora/Sergeant. The son of William Haynesworth, a retired merchant, Matthew grew up in Sumter and was a carpenter before the war. Enlisted on April 8,1862, at Sumter, S.C. by Captain Garden. Given the rank of 5th Corporal. Served at 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Suffolk, and was Gunner on the howitzer crew at Gettysburg. Promoted to Sergeant on June 15,1863. Present until paroled at Appomattox. 25 years old, 5'-4" tall, fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair.
