This list comes from the book Southern Bronze, by Glenn Dedmondt.

Mr. Dedmondt says that most of this information was compiled from the Appomottox Roles, and he had graciously given his permission for us to use it.

 

ALLSBROOKS, James; Private. Enlisted in the battery on April 5, 1864 at Lindsey Station, Va. by Captain Garden. Present at Appomattox. 18 years old when he was paroled. 5'-10" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

ANDERSON, David C.; Private. From Greenville County. Enlisted in the battery at Columbia on May 24th, 1862. On the company report of Jan. "&" Feb. 1864, he was "Absent on Furlough since Feb. 29, 1864 (21 days)". Present at Appomattox. 5'-10" tall, "Ruddy" complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

ANDERSON, J.H.; Private. Enlisted in the battery on February 15,1863, at Sumter by Lt. George Coit. Present at Appomattox. 5'-6" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

ANDREWS, R.W.; Private. (farrier/veterinarian) Born in 1795 in Sumter district of S.C. and was by occupation a farmer. Enlisted in the battery on June 21, 1862, at Columbia as a substitute for James H. Aycock. In July, 1862, detailed as a "farrier". Wounded at Sharpsburg, September 17, 1862, "slightly in right shoulder." On May 4, 1863, reported "absent without leave". He returned on October 13, 1863. On the Nov. "&" Dec. 1863 report, he was marked "present". On the Jan. "&" Feb. 1864 report, he was noted, "Detached by order Medical Board." Discharged by Gen. Winder, being 69 years of age "&" suffering from chronic rheumatism. 5'-10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and gray hair.

ATWOOD, John L.; Private/Corporal (artificer/saddler). Enlisted April 30,1862, at Lawrence C.H. (Laurens), S.C. by Captain Garden. On the Jan. "&" Feb. 1863 report, he is noted as being "On daily extra duty as saddler" and is so noted through June of 1864. Received 21 days leave on October 26,1863. In early 1865, (January or February), he was assigned extra duty as saddler in ordnance department of the battalion. Captured at Amelia Courthouse on April 5, 1865 and sent to Point Lookout. He arrived at Point Lookout on April 13,1865 and released on June 22, 1865. 6'-l 1/2" tall, light complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes.

AXUM, William; Private. Enlisted in the battery on March 4, 1862 by Lt. W.H. Coit and was present at all musters until paroled at Appomattox. He was wounded slightly in the hand on July 3rd,1863, at Gettysburg. When paroled, he was 20 years old, had light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

BAGLEY, L.; Private. Present at Appomattox. 21 years old, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

BAKER, J.J.; Private. Was transferred from Company K., Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery to command of conscripts for assignment under special orders from War Department. Assigned to the battery on June 16, 1864.

BAKER, John; Private. Maybe the same as above. Present at Appomattox. 37 years old, 5'-10" tall, dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair.

BARNES, John; Corporal; Enlisted on March 20, 1862, at Cheraw, by Lt. W.H. Coit. Wounded on July 2nd, 1863, at Gettysburg, "severely contused in left hip." Furloughed Feb. 23, 1865, and didn't return.

BETZ, John; Private. Enlisted April 30, 1862, at Sumter, by Captain Garden. Captured on Nine Mile Road near Richmond on October 27th, 1864. Arrived at Point Lookout on October 31 st, 1864 and was exchanged on March 28, 1865.

BOLLICK, R.D.; Private. Enlisted September 15, 1864, at Columbia by Major Green. Admitted to Jackson Hospital on December 20th, 1864, with "Odontalgia", and deserted on December 27th, 1864. Present at Appomattox. 18 years old, 5'-8" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

BOON, John; Private. Enlisted at Cheraw, S.C., on May 15,1862, by 1st Lt. William Henry Coit. Present at Appomattox. 32 years old, 5'- 11 " tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

BOWEN, A.H.; Private. Enlisted April 8, 1862, at Sumter, by Captain Garden. Present through October 1863. Nov-Dec. 1863 detailed as Hospital Steward.

BOYD, Julius H.; Private. Enlisted at Richmond on December 1st, 1864, by Captain Garden. Captured at Coldfield on April 7, 1865 and sent to Point Lookout where he arrived on April 14, 1865. Discharged from Point Lookout on June 24th, 1865. 5'-11 " tall, dark complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes.

BRADFORD, John N., Private. Received in exchange for James White, July 15, 1862. Transferred from Co. C, Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery under S.O. No. 29, Brig. Gen. W.D. Smith. Present through May-June, 1863. Absent without leave since July 9, 1863.

BRADLEY, W.J.; Private. Present at Appomattox. 18 years old, 6'-0" tall, dark complexion.

BREWER, George W.; Private. Enlisted into the battery on November3,1864 by Major Green. Present at Appomattox. 38 years old, 5'-8" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

BROWN, J.T.; Private. Was transferred from K Company, Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery, on June 16, 1864. Present at Appomattox. 21 years old, 5'-6" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

BROWN, S.J.; Private. Enlisted March 22,1862 at Cheraw by Lt. W.H. Coit.

BROWN, Thomas; Private. Enlisted December 28, 1864 at Columbia by Major Green.

BRUNSON, Jack T.; Private. Enlisted October 6, 1864 at Columbia by Major Green. Present at Appomattox. 21 years old, 5'5" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

BUTTS, Matthew E.; Private. Enlisted May 16, 1864 at Lindsey Station, Va. by Captain Garden. From Chesterfield County. Discharged by order of General Lee approved February 23, 1865, "rheumatism" .

CAMPBELL, William A.; Private. Enlisted in the battery at Cheraw, S.C., on February 25, 1862, by 1st Lt. W.H. Coit. On June l5th, 1862, he was sent to the hospital at Columbia from which he was "furloughed and not heard from since." In the Company muster of Jan. "&" Feb. 1863, he was noted "present.", but on May 7, 1863, he was "Absent without leave". In July 1864, W.A. Campbell was on the muster roll of Co. B, Ward's Battalion, C.S. Prisoners. The men were pardoned by the President and directed to be returned to their respective commands per Special Order No. 179, A "&" IGO, dated June 30,1864. In Jan. "&" Feb.1865, Campbell was "present", and was present at Appomattox. 25 years old, 5'-8" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

CANNON, Rossier M.; Private. Was enlisted by Lieutenant George Coit in Cheraw, S.C. on February 27th, 1863. He was by occupation a shoemaker. His physical disabilities, however, caused him to be unsuitable for service. He was sent to the hospital from Culpeper on June 17th, 1863. The hospital report and recommendation for discharge includes the following description; "Deafness and Cleft Palate which so interferes with speech as to render it impossible for him to be understood. 16 years of age and physically unfit for any duty." Also, "sallow complexion". At his discharge he was 16 years old, 4'-11" tall, fair complexion and grey eyes.

CANNON, Thomas A.; Private (teamster) Was enlisted by Lt. George Coit in Cheraw, S.C., on February 26, 1865, and failed to report, his home having since fallen within enemy lines. Appears on a register of "refugees and rebel deserters" received April 5, 1865 from Fortress Monroe. Union records show him captured March 3, 1865, at Cheraw.

CARRAWAY, W.K.; Private. Enlisted March 22, 1862, at Sumter, by Lt. W.H. Coit. was a teamster. From October 7- 15, 1864, he was at Moore Hospital or General Hospital No. 24, with "Rem't Fever". Present until paroled at Appomattox. 32 years old, 5'- 11 " tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair.

CHAPMAN, W.G.; Private. Enlisted May 10,1862, at Columbia, by Captain Garden. Present at Appomattox. 20 years old, 5'-10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

CHRISTMAS, R.L.; Private. Enlisted into the battery at Columbia, S.C., on May 15, 1864, by Major A.J. Green. Present at Appomattox. 20 years old, 5'-7" tall, light complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair.

CLARK, James A.; Private. Enlisted at Cheraw, S.C. on February 16, 1864, by Captain Garden. Present at Appomattox. 17 years old, 5'-9" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.

CLARK, John W.; Private. Enlisted on August 10, 1864, at Petersburg, Virginia, by Captain Garden. Present at Appomattox. 18 years old, 5'-10" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes, and light hair.

COIT, George Erasmus; 2nd Lt./lst Lt. Was a teacher before the war. When the battery was formed, he was commissioned Senior 2nd Lieutenant. Commanded a gun at the Battle of 2nd Manassas and was directly responsible for saving the battery's disabled guns at the Battle of Sharpsburg. After the death of Lt. Pringle, Lt. Coit was promoted to Junior 1st Lt. on September 25th, 1862. Muster roll for Jan. "&" Feb. 1863, reports as "absent", "Detailed as recruiting officer, Jan.21,1863". During the Siege of Suffolk, on May 3,1863, Lt. Coit was killed instantly when an enemy artillery round grazed the top of the defensive earthwork and cut him in two.

COIT, Julius T.; Quartermaster Sergeant. Enlisted on May 3rd, 1862 at Columbia by Captain Garden. On the company muster roll dated June 1 to August 1, 1862, he was "absent", "Detailed as Asst. Enrolling Officer under Conscription Act, June 27, 1862." Absent through October 1st. Was "present" from October 1 st, 1862, through May 1st, 1863. On July 18, 1863, he was promoted to Captain and Assistant Quartermaster.

COIT, William Henry; 1st Lt. The son of a Presbyterian minister, William Coit grew up in Cheraw. Graduated from the Citadel and was a teacher in a military academy before the war. From the formation of the Palmetto Light Artillery, he served as Senior 1st Lieutenant of the company and was the acting commanding officer in the absence of Captain Garden. In August 1862, he was "absent under orders from Gen'1 Hood". Served at 1st Manassas and Sharpsburg. Furloughed for 27 days on February 18,1863. Served in the Suffolk campaign and at Gettysburg. In Nov. "&" Dec. 1863, he was "absent on sick leave". In Jan. "&" Feb. 1864, he was "absent at hospital." In Mar. "&" April 1864, he was "furloughed for 60 days from April 20." In May "&" June 1864, he was "absent", "in hospital at Fayetteville, N.C." His health problems seem to focus around Chronic diarrhea and Dysentery. In spite of health problems, he took part in the Mine Run campaign, and the Richmond campaign. In Sept. "&" Oct. 1863, he signed the muster roll as "commanding the Company". Present at Appomattox. 30 years old, 5'-9" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.
