Resaca can be miserably hot, but
this year the weather couldn't have been better. We had clear skies,
warm days, and comfortable nights for the whole weekend. Bruce Hoover
came early on Thursday and staked out a campsite which was in the
civilian area (to avoid all the commotion we have had in the past
when camping with the artillery) and everyone agreed that it was one
of the best campsites we have had at Resaca. We also had one of the
best looking company streets that the PLA has had in a long time.
Once again the mess served steak on Saturday night, and watermelon on
Sunday!
There was some confusion when it
was discovered that our registration had never been received by the
event hosts, and at first we thought we would not receive any powder
bounty, but after we agreed to play Yankee on Sunday, they gave us
the entire amount after all.
Saturday's battle was not at the
usual location, but rather where civilian camping used to be; some of
you may know it as the site of the famous "dust bowl" 3 years ago.
The field was a bit small, but it wasn't too bad. The PLA had a nice
spot near the crowd and we burned a fair amount of powder.
On Sunday the battle was back at
the location from the past few years, but with a different twist. The
guns were mostly in the woods and the PLA took a spot on a hill
almost back at the paved road. At the beginning of the battle we were
a Confederate gun, and fired a couple of shots at advancing Federal
cavalry before being overrun. Then we changed jackets in the
confusion, and reappeared as a Federal cannon crew for the rest of
the battle, turning the gun back the other direction. Over the course
of both battles we had a chance to burn over 60 rounds, so the crews
were busy both days!
All in all, the people who came to
Resaca had a great time, and many said that Resaca is their favourite
event that the PLA does every year.
