Synopsis: Tomasu led a peacuful existence in his village of the Hidden, a prosecuted religion in the land of poweful lords and weak Emperors. Until one day, one of the most powerful and ruthless lords, Iida of the powerful Tohan clan, discovers Tomasu's village and destroys Tomasu's family along with his childhood.
Sheltered by Shigeru, a lord of the rival Otori clan, Tomasu changes his name and studies to be a warrior. As their relationship evolves, so does Takeo—the new name given to the teenager along with the new role.
But both Takeo and Shigeru face powerful enemies. The Tohan clan and their ruthless leader is only the most obvious of them.
Full Review: This is a short book, which however suceeds in painting a vivid, intricate picture of Japan-like country, with its culture of honor and combat, love and enmity, different religions and common loyalties. In addition to the culture, the author manages to create not one but two poignant romance stories, as well populate the series with the Tribe. The Tribe—who look like humans and can interbreed with them, possess incredibly sharp senses and are unusually deft; sort of genetic Ninja race. Except for the Tribe and their talents, there is no sorcery in this fantasy; however, the book seems colorful and fantastic as it is.
There is clearly further adventure indicated at the conclusion; and yet the brief book gives a full measure of wonder and conflict.
Overall: 6.5; Plot: 6; Characters: 6; Style: 7; World-building: 7; Originality: 6.5;
