A well-written novel, combining tension with humor, this mystery nevertheless misses the gripping power of the author's best books.

Genre: Mystery (Police Procedural)

Synopsis: Kate Martinelli, a San Francisco police investigator, is called upon to investigate a murder of an obusive man. When a second murder indicates militant feminism gone murderous, Kate and her partner are racing to stop the deadly and mysterious group before more deaths occur.

At the same time, abuse of women forms its own deadly counterpoint in the investigation, and the suspicions fall on Kate's dearest friends.

Full Review: This is a very competent mystery, full of interesting and intelligent characters. Kate's own relationship with her lover, her friends and her friends form the centerpoint of the plot.

While interesting and supported by good characters, the plot lacks the immediacy and solidity of this author's previous books, and the grim, personal involvement of, say, With Child.

Recommended to the fans of this series, this installment, while enjoyable, is not the best introduction to the series or to the author.

Overall: 6; Plot: 5.5; Characters: 6; Style: 6; World-building: 5; Originality: 5.5;
