Melissa Scott

Melissa Scott has written a number of books, many dealing with complex social issues in a futuristic technological environment. Most of her books use members of the disenfranchized classes as protagonist, often thrust by need and desperation to make a change in the society which exploits and ignores them. She also likes to explore the issues of artificial intelligence and alternative sexualities.

Unlike most of her "technological" SF, the trilogy "Roads of Heaven" (Silence Leigh) introduces a system of magic as both a method of interstellar travel and a reason to sharply limit the development of computer intelligence. A fascinating adventure, the trilogy is prehaps her best work:

    1. Five-Twelfths of Heaven
    2. Silence in Solitude
    3. The Empress of Earth
