Our body changes the food we eat into a sugar called glucose.   Glucose is carried by the bloodstream to the cells of the body where it is used as fuel.  When glucose cannot enter the cells, it builds up in the bloodstream and can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
