Life History:
(Written based on S.Thirunavukkarasu’s Dr. Mu Vaa vin Peruvaazhvu and Akilan’s Vetriyin Ragasyangal)

Mu. Va was born in 1912 at Tirupathur, North Arcot district of Tamilnadu in a small family. His maternal grand mother grew him up with affection in his childhood. After his high school basic education, he has joined as writer in Government’s taluk office. This position has not fetched him enough money to lead a decent living even though the work was demanding. He fell sick. This made him to think and direct himself to another direction, i.e., becoming a Tamil teacher.

Tamil teacher and Tamil writer was not a lucrative profession then and it can clearly be seen in the lives of his predecessors like Bharatiyar, Thiru Vi. Ka, Pudumai Pittan. In spite of that Mu. Va took Tamil classes from Murugiah Mudaliar and stood first in the final examination in 1935. This earned him a Tamil teacher profession. He got married to his maternal cousin Ms. Radha. He and Radha have three children.

Mu Va then studied further and in 1939 he became Bachelor of Literature, did Masters in 1944 and became first Doctorate in Tamil in 1948 at Madras university. Side by side his professional career took him to through as a school teacher, college teacher, university teacher and at last as university vice-chancellor. This shows him his perseverence, dedication and tire-less hard work toward achieving his vision.

Mu Va has held several honorary positions through out his career. He has been a Senate member for Madras, Tirupati and Annamalai universities. He has served as member of Education board in Kerala, Mysore Usmanian, Bangalore, Andhra, New Delhi, Cambridge and Madurai universities.

Mu. Va has not limited his knowledge just to Tamil language. He developed his acumen in English literature and made detailed study about the English novels which were published between 16th and 20th century. He was attracted by various great personalities and went through their biographies. That made him a novelist par excellence. He has written many lively novels and published many works on Sangam literature. His style of writing is very modern in structure and lucid. The stream of thought in his novels are highly appreciated. The most memorable work is that he has extracted great ideas, thoughts and opinions from Sangam literature and published in very presentable manner as honey bee extracts honey from flower and collects it in honeycombs.

It is unimaginable for a life time to publish such a vast collection as he has contributed. 13 novels, 2 short stories, 2 fiction stories, 6 plays, 11 compositions (Katturai), 24 literary works, 4 child literature works, 4 letter stories, 1 travelogue, 1 Tamil literature history, 6 linguistic works, 4 biographies, 2 Sangam literature works in English, 1 children grammer and 1 Translation guide are Dr. Mu Va’s gift to the mankind.

His novels won various prizes on top of winning the hearts of readers. Agal Vilakku won Sahithya Academy award(India’s topmost literary award). Kallo? Kaviyamo?, Arasiyal Alaigal, Mozhiyiyar Katturaigal won Madras government’s prize. Tamil Valarchi Kazhagam has honored Mu Va’s many novels including Tiruvalluvar alladhu Vazhkkai vilakkam, Mozhi Nool, Viduthalaiya, Ova cheithi.

He has traveled many foreign countries including Russia, Malasia, Singapore, France, Sri lanka, England, Japan, Germany, United states, Italy, Greece and Egypt. That gave him a wide in-sight and global thinking which is expressed in most of his novels.

Many great people have influenced his life, Tiruvalluvar the most. Thiru Vi. Ka has inspired Mu Va by his principled life and Mu. Va’s style of writing closely follows that of Thiru Vi.Ka. His wide repertoire can be understood by knowing the people who are admired by him. Thayumaanar, Appar, Nammaazhvaar, Manicka Vaasagar, Ramalinga Swami, Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Rama Theerthar, Gandhi, Thiru Vi.Ka, Tagore, Kandekar, Somerset Mom, Bernard Shaw are admired and are followed by Dr. Mu. Va.

He passed away in 1974 from this world but he is in the hearts of Tamil. His works will be remembered till Tamil language exists.
