Longtime Florida residents, Lyn and Bill Roche, know firsthand the effects of Alzheimer's disease on families. Lyn's father fought a courageous thirteen year battle with the disease, ending in his death in 1994. Bill's Mom is currently waging the same losing battle. The devoted years of caregiving by Lyn's mother and Bill's dad inspired Lyn to write a book to uplift other caregivers. The book, Coping With Caring, was published by award-winning Elder Books.
Lyn's book has been called a creative survival manual offering down-to-earth techniques to simplify everyday life for stressed caregivers. Carmel Sheridan, D.M.D., M.P.H., author of Failure Free Activities for the Alzheimer's Patient and Reminiscence, describes the book as "Full of coping devices, thoughtful reflections, wisdom and practical activities." Sheridan further states, "Coping With Caring is an essential resource for anyone undertaking the arduous journey of caring for a person with dementia."
In a recent review, New York's Newsday said, "Roche's volume is a hot bath after a long frustrating day. She has lived through her father's Alzheimer's and her mother-in-law is afflicted. Her goal is to offer a pat on the back, a boost to morale, a cup of loving kindness to those undergoing the same thing."
Senior Times Magazine reads, "Coping With Caring is small enough to tuck in one's pocket, it can be pulled out when a friend is needed. A friend who will understand the demands as well as the joys of caregiving."
The book is written for caregivers who care for dementia loved ones at home, however many professional caregivers are finding the book helpful and insightful. Each page provides an inspiring daily reflection from a caregiver's point of view, followed by a practical caregiving tip. A handy ten-page index is provided for quick reference to over two-hundred challenges caregivers might encounter such as wandering, sun-downing, caregiver stress, anger and so on.
