BELT POUCHES |
Imported from Hungary, this style of handmade leather pouch (tarsoly) is one of the oldest and most unique metalsmithing and leatherworking example from that country. Worn by princes and clan chiefs, it dates back as far as the 9th century when it was a vital part of the mounted fighter's belt accessories. It was especially popular between the 9th and 13th centuries before the Italians and Germans influenced fashion. The hammered metal cover designs (mustra) characterized by mythological illustrations, trees of life, trees of knowledge and trees of God all intertwined with vines, leaves, and flowerbuds had special meanings, often of a mysterious-healing-magical nature. Metal cover designs will vary with each order. Original in the National Museum of Hungary
