Anbinder" Subject: [SFI] Suggestions for mailing STARFLEET business items Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 17:36:18 -0400 Recent discussions within STARFLEET, and recent advisories distributed by some of our employers, have put the issue of unknown mail into a strong spotlight. Here are some thoughts and suggestions for mailing items related to STARFLEET. Tips for Sending ---------------- 1) Make sure you use an envelope that's an appropriate size for the material you're mailing. Don't raise undue concern by using a large manilla envelope to mail a sheet of paper. 2) Address your piece of mail clearly, to the specific person and/or office you need to reach, at the correct address as published or provided. 3) Provide a full and complete return address, including your name, and if you're already a STARFLEET member, your SCC number and/or chapter affiliation. This is especially helpful if the person or office you're writing doesn't know you and therefore won't recognize your name. 4) Sending something unusual? Let the person know in advance, by e-mail or phone, what to expect. Tips for Receiving ------------------ 1) It's important that we not let paranoia get the better of us. We should keep doing everything we normally do, and keep up the usual business of STARFLEET. 2) If a suspicious envelope or package arrives, treat it carefully. If it appears to be from someone you know, check with that person to make sure he or she actually sent it. If it's from someone you don't know, or has no return address, open it carefully or ask your local authorities for advice or assistance. 3) There've been lots of good descriptions of what to do or not to do with a letter or package. Opening an envelope flat on your desk with a letter opener is a good idea; if there's anything other than paper inside, this makes it least likely that powder or liquid or another substance would splash out. 4) If you open an envelope or parcel and there's something suspicious inside, such as a powder or liquid, do call the authorities, whether a company security office or the local police or sheriff's department. They'll be able to help. Membership Packets ------------------ If you receive a STARFLEET membership packet, it's in a 9x12 manilla envelope, and should have a return address label bearing the Membership Processing P.O. Box address in Gaithersburg, Maryland. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rear Admiral Mark H.
