Freethought

Freethought has been an interest of mine since 1988, when I first discovered that there was a coherent body of literature and a number of organizations dedicated to this subject. As I became active in this area, I hooked up with the Rationalist Society, a group of freethinkers in St. Louis, Missouri. I produced a local access cable TV program, Feethinking 101, edited the newsletter, Secular Subjects, and eventually served as president. In addition, I also met many fine people in St. Louis, Kansas City, and all over the country.

I have written extensively on freethought-related topics for Secular Subjects, the African Americans for Humanism newsletter, and the Humanists of Washington's Secular Humanist Press. A collection of various of these works is listed below:

Headshops for Christians - You won't find any water pipes or rolling papers, but some of the stuff you can buy at Christian bookstores will make you just as loopy.

News Flash: Speed of Light Slowing - A commentary on the never-ending battle between faith and science as expressed in the debate over the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin

The Christian Identity Movement - Religion has traditionally been used to justify oppression and even genocide. This is just the latest chapter.

Black Muslims Don't Laugh - Or, at least, not at my jokes.

The Christian Money Machine - There seems to be a lot of unabashed emphasis on earthly riches. Kind of makes it hard to tell the difference between religion and other types of businesses.

The Return of Movie Censorship - Back in the '60s, the first thing I read in Catholic newspapers was the list of condemned movies. Here's why.

Screwy Louie Farrakhan - Maybe Minister Farrakhan isn't a crazed racist, but he sure used to be.

The Pope(s) and Evolution - The Pope's recognition of evolution hardly signals an outbreak of rationality.

The Xtian X-Files - Religion finds itself right at home with pseudoscience - again.

Are Black People Too Religious? - This is a trick question - everybody is too religious.

Pets - The devoted subject of a supreme being is indistiguishable from a pet.

The Christian Bimillenium - A once-every-thousand-year Christian silly season is upon us.

Top Ten Reason Why Jesus Hasn't Returned Yet - In case you might be getting a little impatient after 2,000 years

What God Has Revealed to Man - It's all right here.
