NJSUG Workgroup meeting re-cap

Highlights:

Introduction and high level discussion of the 1st NJSUG project. It will be a full text search & retrieval facility for the archives (going back about 6 years) of the comp.lang.smalltalk newsgroup. It will be developed with VisualAge and its Web Connection for the front end and Gemstone as the DB on the back end. It is anticipated that Windows NT will the OS of choice. Web server software will most likely be O'Reilly's Website (it's free).

Identified several major areas of work:

1. Front end development - VA & Web connection

2. DB parsing and loading with N-Gram technology

3. Website set-up and administration

4. Gemstone DB set-up and administration

5. Live feeds and daily update process

Surveyed group members as to whether they will be involved on a purely observer status or doer status. Also polled group members for areas of interest in which they would concentrate (from list above).

Actions for next meeting

1. Inquiries will be made to Chubb & Son, Inc. for the possible use of lab space and workstations for the duration of this project.

2. Gemstone will be asked if they can provide reduced cost Gemstone training to the group.

3. Project overview & information will be posted to the NJSUG home page (www.mordor.com/jpletzke).

Next meeting

Next meeting will be Thursday, October 24, 1996 (at Chubb).
