Website Notes

August 30, 2001 - Completed updates to Railroad and Transit News and Photos pages. Various minor revisions to other pages. Added new page with information on the hobby of bonsai.

August 25, 2001 - After ten months of putting off my supposedly monthly task of updating this website, I decided to finally do this long-awaited update, and also revise the content of the site and give it a bit of a facelift in the meantime. I had felt for a while that the name "Streetcar Boy's Home Page" had to go, so I got rid of it and decided to replace it with the less cutesy and more descriptive "NorthEast Rail & Transit".

Part of this content revision is being done so I won't necessarily be obliged (or constrained) to try to update the site every month like clockwork... monthly updates seemed like a good idea when I first started the site, but now that I'm old (haha) and married and have had some career changes it's harder for me to do so. On the other hand I'll try not to avoid updating the site for ten months, either! I'll be making more changes and continuing to update content in the next few weeks, so please feel free to e-mail me me with any comments or suggestions on the new changes and content, as well as any other things you might like to see here on NorthEast Rail & Transit.

Biography

My name is Jonathan White. I am a 1995 graduate of Northeastern University in Boston with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Logistics and Transportation Management and a minor in History. I work for Amtrak's Commuter Operations division in Boston where I am a transportation department supervisor. Married, no kids yet.

For the brave and curious, here is the obligatory photo of me, shown here hanging out with a life-size Lego Boy at Casa Loma in Toronto. I'm also a proud member of the Haggis, or Honorable Association of Good Guys and Irreverent Souls (that's "Honourable" to you guys up north). If you don't know the story behind the Haggis, go to rec.models.railroad, mention it, and then duck!

Aside from the rail-related hobbies shown on this website, I also have many other interests. Some of them include:

Why the interest in railroading and transit? Well, I can recall going into Boston on the MBTA Green Line with my father and sister when I was no taller than the fare box, riding sadly aging PCCs or then-new Boeing LRVs. I always stood up front with the motorman and pumped questions at him all the way in and out of the city. I guess the interest in streetcars and electric transit stayed with me - although I don't stand up front and grill the motorman anymore, I still commute on the Green Line nearly every day. I usually travel at least once a year to attend streetcar charters in cities such as Toronto, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, and attended many right here in Boston back when the MBTA offered them. The interest in railroads, real and model, is an offshoot of my interest in transit, and the interest in Northeast Corridor passenger operations in particular comes from my career choice. Living in Maine from 1981 to 1990 got me interested in the Maine Central, even though it had already been purchased by Guilford a month before I moved there. Unfortunately, by the time I got my driver's license, the line through nearby Ellsworth had been abandoned and much of what ran on the remains of MEC's East End was either B&M blue or Guilford gray. Still, the Maine Central bug had bit me, and never let go no matter what color the engines were.

Thanks to all of you who have visited and contributed comments, news, and photos over the years.
