Pond*
by Ken Shiovitz Little does so
good as pond To soothe the
soul like magic wand. Greens that
float, long spears, broad arrows, Anchored pads
along the narrows. Tiny mouths
beneath the surface Send small
circles without purpose. Tiny twigs bear
thigh and knee And slowly sink
beneath debris. Purple flower,
red-streaked head Poke up from the
brownish bed. Pure white
flower, spotted face Piercing fairy
mosses' lace. There between two
lettuce leaves! Tiny green toad
floats at ease. Hiding in your
fleshy urn, Gone again when I
return? *Pond was strongly influenced by an old poem I had read in a nature
magazine. However the creative output
was derived from images of our backyard pond.
I have never compared the two poems directly, as some time had
elapsed. Still, acknowledgement of
inspiration and style is in order. |
