The Hero

             General Flask reviewed the battlements,

             He scanned the troops below.

             Supplies were all in order,

             The attack was set to go.

 

             Artillery shone as crystalline,

             Solutions bubbled from the heat.

             Artillerymen in white lab coats

             Would fire and then repeat.

 

             Far below on an open plain,

             Troops encircled the gray Rock.

             Hats of olive, denim pants,

             Field guides, counters, and clocks.

 

             Where had it come from, this gray Rock,

             No impact crater shown?

             Appeared one day and downed a plane

             At full speed into which had flown.

 

             Intelligence gave little clue of

             What beyond the surface lay.

             No trace disturbance atmospheric

             Or abnormal geology.

 

             So General Flask cried out the order

             "Charge into the fray."

             Many a good man and woman

             Would fall from sight that day.

 

             Now far behind the active front,

             Private Bird raised his 'nocs aloft.

             "Get a message to the colonel

             Our funding’s to be cut off."

 

             Assults waged on for many years,

             First wave was full wiped out,

             Likewise the eager second wave,

             All found new jobs without.

             And Bird was walking backwards
