Heartland by Ken Shiovitz FOR CATHY She
built her solid spirit upon the heartland of goodness and beauty, In the last lush valley where
winds, flying wild above Swaying stalks of ochre grain,
softly graze grassy slopes, Before plowing full force into
pillars of rufous rock. She remains invisible to
herself, despite steadfast scrutiny, unmasking Through relentless
surface-wave of mountain stream, first Miniscule filament of
defilement, or thickening of horizon, As writhing swarm arises over
distant winter wheat. She is as inseparable from the
landscape, as the meadowlark, Forever in melody,
emphatically broadcasting mood, localized only By brownish generality of
feathered back on cedar fence, unless Displayed willingly, black
onyx necklace over yellow breast. She selected her heartland
through sense and distance, usually Avoiding direct assault,
accepting discomfort, learning, Recoiling from patronizing
voices, so plump and sure, Quiet with strangers,
confidently laughing with friends. She never notices that her
beauty and goodness seep forth, Diffusing color and depth and
shade, nuance And perspective, understanding
and love. Her heartland stretches out
endlessly, within my soul. |
