Boundaries

By Ken Shiovitz

The membrane of cell,

When viewed through a ‘scope,

Surrounds it entire

In sealed envelope.

‘Though many come begging

For entry inside,

Permeability limits,

Through fat and peptide.

While freedom and safety

Thrive inside of border,

They can’t be maintained

Without internal order.

For membrane has pores

That penetrate deep,

Lined with more membranes,

That security keep.

So cellular commerce

Survives untrodden,

From virus or anthrax,

Or Osama bin Laden.
