Louis’ maternal grandmother was also named Devorah and also
short. In fact she, Devorah Guttmann
Shear, was called “Little Bubbe” (Little Grandma), and lived at the family
home for about 20 years after Devorah Shiovitz passed away in the early
1920s. Devorah Shiovitz was apparently
illiterate and very quiet, but had an artistic bent. Devorah Guttmann Shear’s family had a
history of much more education than Jacob or Devorah Shiovitzs’ families, and
included many rebs (educated laymen) and rabbis, even to the renowned Vilna
Gaon. Devorah Shear passed away in
1945. |
