I have been developing software since 1983. I am a "natural-born" programmer, entirely self-taught, and came to programming from my desire to create original and innovative programs, which I continue to do daily as a music software entrepreneur (see: broadway-performance-systems.com). My first major program (ScoreInput, written in Borland Turbo Pascal) was published and distributed worldwide from 1990 to 1992 by Passport Designs, at the time a very well-known music software publisher. Beyond my knowledge of and experience with a wide range of programming languages and technologies, I have an innate talent for software design, and object-oriented programming in particular. I am very creative and insightful, and am passionate about writing code that is clear, robust, extensible, and that makes use of the latest and greatest technologies of the day, which I learn very quickly.
My leadership experience has come from a number of areas. Since 1995 I have worked as a freelance development consultant and corporate trainer to over 150 corporate, federal and state government clients and training centers. In so doing, I have mentored literally hundreds (well over 500) corporate programmers in a wide range of industries and government agencies. In 2006, I was a principal in a "start-up" where I served as Chief Technical Officer, architect, and lead developer, directing and guiding a dozen programmers who worked under me, and whose efforts I coordinated.
Another example of my leadership experience, outside of the software arena, is when, from 1997 to 2001, I led an environmental group I formed in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area. This group, Trash Force, did trash/recycling cleanups in public areas throughout the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area, and I lead the group on over 75 outings, which at times numbered up to 100 people. We often joined forces with other organizations (singles groups, university alumni clubs, etc.), and I managed all that was necessary to make for successful outings. My group's work, and my own initiative in it, garnered a lot of press, including articles in The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The New York Times, and People magazine. In addition, I personally won a number of awards for my leadership of this group, including the 1999 Swiss Army Equipped Award from the Victorinox company (the "Swiss Army Knife" company).
I have superior communication skills. My experience as a development consultant and corporate trainer has given me the ability to communicate effectively with clients, both verbally and in writing, and to be able to convey even complex technologies successfully to a wide range of audiences. I've been involved in writing documentation for the various software I've written, both for developer and end-user use. In addition, I am adept at understanding client needs, and in efficiently producing software that fulfills their requirements.
