Though by many to be the most primitive of cameras. This camera does not use any lens to project the image onto the film. Instead it only uses a small "pin" hole. These cameras come in all different formats and focal lengths. Many people who use these cameras prefer the extreme wide angle versions over the "normal" or long focal lenghts. These cameras require a steady placement as the exposure, even with fast films and full sun are seconds to minutes long. These cameras also have the very good depth of field. Every thing is equally in focus, from item right in front of the camera to items on the horizon. However since there is no lens, the image is not real sharp. This is one of the main reasons people use these cameras. They produce a unique image that is unable to be produced by any other means.
Many folks starting out using the Historic Processes (also know as Alt-photo processes) will use Pin Hole cameras since these processes require you to have a negative the size of your finished print. So instead of investing a lot of money in a large format view camera, lens, film holders and tripod, they will make or buy a pinhole camera.
The Royce Pin Hole Camera is available in a number of different standard formats and any focal length you want, from extreme wide angle to extremely long. Also available is a Pin Hole Negative holder, suitable for film or paper negatives. This holder is thinner and lighter then a normal film holder and will not work in a lens camera without an adapter.
