Although my mother's maiden name was Develine, her bloodline was Ely because her father, Robert Franklin Ely, changed his name from that of his father, Thomas J. Ely, to that of his stepfather, Henry C. Develine. This line has been one of the hardest to trace, because Thomas J. Ely died so long ago (1885), and at such an early age (33). We recently had a breakthrough when my cousin Patti Graul recalled that my mother had put a note in her family tree that Thomas Ely had a brother Ben living in Gardena, CA. Patti found a 1920 census record showing a Ben Ely living in Gardena, CA. She also found an 1860 census record for Clarke Co., Iowa showing a Gideon Ely from Tennessee with a wife E.A.D. Ely from Kentucky and sons named B. F. Ely, age 6, and T.W. Ely, age 8. The age of T.W. Ely matched the known 1852 birth date of our Thomas J. Ely, who we thought had been born in Iowa. At that point I found the only cemetery listed in Gardena, the Roosevelt Memorial Park, and gave them a call. Sure enough, they had a Benjiman Franklin Ely buried there. A visit to the cemetery yielded his 1854 date of birth and his 1932 date of death. We were then able to obtain a death certificate for Ben Ely from L.A. County, which showed that his father was Gideon Ely of Tennessee, and his mother was Eliza Sims of Kentucky. A search of the Ely Family Genforum then yielded a book titled "Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties" Volume II by Hattie Muncy Bales. Gideon Ely and his family and ancestors were listed there, and much of the information presented below was taken from that book. The information on Philologous Ely and his children is courtesy of his great great granddaughter, Carol Heller. Carol also found an 1870 census record for Marion County, Iowa which shows that Gideon Ely did indeed have a son named Thomas J. Ely, proving that we had the right connection.
