Ratliff

A picture of Jemima Newell Ratliff and John Oliver Staley and their grandchildren, taken in about 1907, probably in Smyrna, Clarke County, Iowa. Jemima died shortly after this picture was taken (click to enlarge).

Most of the information presented here was taken from the excellent work "Richard Ratcliff of Lancashire England and Talbot County, Maryland and his Ancestors and Descendants 1066-1988", by Clarence Earl Ratcliff, which can be found at the web site "The Ratcliff Family Tree". Another good source of information on the Ratliffs is "The Ratliff Family Twig", by William Bosshard. I am indebted to Mr. Bosshard for finding the connection between our families, and for telling me about these web sites. The Ratcliffs/Ratliffs were a devout group of Quakers, and my grandfather Daniel E. Staley may have been a Quaker in his early years, no one is quite sure about that. He did settle in a Quaker city, i.e. Whittier, California. He was later a member of the Church of Religious Science.

The Friends Cemetery in Franklin Township, Clarke County, Iowa was created on land that was sold to the Society of Friends (Quakers) by Archelus Ratliff with the proviso that a designated section of the land be reserved for the Ratliff family and their heirs and other relatives.This means that everyone buried in the Ratliff section is a relative somehow by either blood or marriage.
