Roman Republic

Roman Republic, C.Cluvius Saxula, AE As , 33mm diameter, c. 169-158 B.C.E., Crawford 173/1. Obverse: Laureate head of Janus. Reverse: Prow right; above, moneyer's ligature: CC/X [?]. Marks of value on both reverse and obverse. This coin is a bit of a mystery. It appears to be attributable to Saxula, but the ligature is not quite right. After studying it under magnification, I suspect either that the second "C" was originally an "S", but its appearance was changed by deposits, corrosion, and/or careless cleaning or it was struck with a defective die.
