About the Ultimate Gamecock Screen Saver:
Most screen savers found on the internet are put together using a screen saver maker and usually the only thing they are capable of is bouncing one graphic around the screen. That's why they run so slow and do very little. Those days are over. The Ultimate Gamecock Screen Saver was written from scratch and does more things than you can shake a stick at. The screen saver can display all your gamecock icons, wallpapers and graphics. It will also play all your gamecock audio and video files! If that weren't enough it has a scrolling marquee, a countdown timer and about 30 options that you can set, so it'll look and behave to your liking. The current version is a test version, although I don't expect we'll find to many problems with it. If you're interested in testing it, then read this page top to bottom and follow the directions closely. I appreciate it!
Delete old screen savers:
You might as well delete the Moving Gamecock Screen Saver and USC Pileup Screen Saver. Those 2 screen savers will be worthless once you have the Ultimate Gamecock screen saver. If you think these screen savers are on your computer, the only files you have to delete are MVCOCKY1.SCR, MVCOCKY1.INI and PILEUP.SCR . The screensavers used the file VBRUN300.DLL, but that file shouldn't be deleted. If you can't locate the files you want to delete, you can use the Windows Find Utility to locate them.
Download all the media files you can find:
Read the The Helmet Project and download all the gamecock helmets to use as graphics.
Download Visual Basic run-time files:
This screen saver was written with Visual Basic 6.0 which requires several run-time files that can be downloaded by clicking HERE. Just follow the directions Microsoft provides for you and everything will be fine. A lot of you may have already done this. If you're not sure, it wouldn't hurt anything for you to do it again.
Download and install other support files:
The file TABCTL32.OCX needs to be in your c:\windows\system directory. If you don't have it, you can download it at Free DLL. Once the file is in the c:\windows\system directory it needs to be registered with your computer. To accomplish that, hit the start button, then click RUN and type regsvr32 c:\windows\system\tabctl32.ocx and click OK. This is the only support file needed at this time.
Download the Ultimate Gamecock Screen Saver:
If you have completed all other steps, if you have read this page thoroughly, if you understand that this screen saver can not damage your computer, if you are a Gamecock fan, if you understand that running the screen saver around non-gamecocks could cause them to lose their last meal, if you understand this is a test version so I can find bugs in the program, if you intend to send feedback to me and report errors, then you can get the screen saver HERE. Extract the file into the c:\ directory. The file ULTIMATE.SCR should end up in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If it doesn't you need to move it there. If you downloaded the zip file you can delete it.
Run the Ultimate Gamecock Screen Saver:
The Ultimate Gamecock Screen Saver has a bunch of options, so it's probably a good idea to configure it first. From your Display Properties Window, select Screen Saver. Select Ultimate Gamecock from the Screen Saver listbox. Click the Settings button and select the options you want. Once you have done that, you can click the preview button to see the screen saver in action or just click the OK button and wait for it to come on.
Please send feedback:
I'm hoping everybody will do me a favor and send me an email to let me know what you think of the Ultimate Gamecock Screen Saver. Include any ideas, wishes, likes, dislikes and anything else you want me to know. Anytime you encounter an error message, find a bug or notice a flaw, please email me and let me know about it. That's the only way I'll be able to get this thing perfect!
Known problems:
- MP3s and other formats are not supported at this time, but future versions will be able to handle them.
- The screen saver does not handle realaudio files and probably never will.
- The little display monitor in the Display Properties window will run the screen saver, but it does not handle all the options nor does it display very well b/c everything is scrunched down so far.
- The screen saver does nothing to handle volume adjustments. It just plays the audio files as is. If you have a video with audio and you're playing an audio file at the same time, it appears that the loudest one will drown out the other. I haven't tested that extensively. If you turn off the option to play audio files, it will still play the audio from videos that may have sound.
