Kurth Lake is on the Angelina River, 8 miles north of Lufkin, at the northern edge of Angelina County (31º27’ N, 94º42’ W). It is owned and operated by the local paper mill company to store industrial water purchased from the river authority. The 700-acre lake has a conservation storage capacity of 16,200 acre-feet at the spillway crest elevation of 197.5 feet above mean sea level. The lake was begun in May 1959 and opened in July 1961. Water is pumped from the Angelina River and from Striker Creek Reservoir, and is eventually returned to the Angelina River. The lake was stocked with 4,000 Florida largemouth in 1998. Large stripers inhabit the lake. A $2.00 day fishing fee is collected at the self serve display at the gate or an annual $10 permit can be purchased. Take Hwy 59 north of Lufkin, through Redland, Texas and take the next paved road to the right (Rivercrest Road) about ½ mile past the flashing orange traffic light. Follow the road and turn left just past the railroad tracks at the paper mill company sign.
